This project called on us to create a Graphical User interface for not just one Web site, but 3 Sites, each within a very short time frame. Two public Web sites and one Intranet/Extranet Site. All three Sites would utilize the same style, layout, and navigation system but retain it’s own unique
identity and architecture.
Because the timeline was extremely short, we needed to parallel our development phases more than required on most projects. This meant we would need to design the interface as the projects were still in the planning phase. It’s like doing the interior decorating before you know if the room is a kitchen or a bathroom. Designing for a project such as this is a difficult task. Designing it in a ridiculously short amount of time is nearly impossible.
To pull it off, we created a design with navigation systems and page layouts that were flexible enough to change as the project evolved. The primary navigation system included the menus for the main sections and sub-sections laid out in a horizontal format at the top of the page leaving the content space open for multiple page layouts with more menus and functionality. This menu system was built into a “smart” template that was utilized by every page of the Site, which allows us to make global changes
with a minimal amount of effort. All 3 Sites were an overwhelming success and because they were built with expansion in mind from the very beginning, they are still growing and evolving.
